The roads were jammed with traffic, the air noxious and gritty. Horns honked, engines growled, faces sneered through windscreens. All was as usual on a Monday morning in the city. Emily sat behind the steering wheel, fingers drumming, lower lip pinched between her teeth as she waited for the traffic lights to change. Travelling through rush-hour was not her idea of a good time, but today it was necessary.

The weekend had passed uneventfully. She’d spent most of it in her apartment, obsessively watching the Harris family through the hidden camera feeds. She’d had moments of guilt, knowing that the family was completely unaware they were being watched—by her, at least—but the more she watched, the harder it was to look away. Something had happened to make all the deception worthwhile—the Harris family appeared to be getting along, which made Emily feel less guilty about lying to both Meredith Fisher and Erica Braithwaite. Besides, she was helping people, trying to make things right for both parties, and sometimes doing the right thing required doing the wrong thing first.

The traffic lights changed from red to amber, and the air turned ugly as impatient drivers honked their horns once more. Emily drove the car onward through the city, past towering buildings and pavements filled with thousands of pedestrians, all dressed in winter greys and blues, all sharing the steely London grimace that she had grown quite accustomed to. Occasionally, her eyes flicked to the dashboard clock. Her appointment wasn’t until eleven, but with the way the traffic was moving this morning, she was relieved she’d left earlier than planned.

As she continued to drive, her mind wandered back to the weekend. She’d declined to stay over at Carter’s house on Saturday night, instead opting to meet him on Sunday for a walk around Hampstead Heath, where an icy breeze had chased them through green open spaces and small wooded areas, before they’d abandoned their stroll for a late lunch and an open fire at a nearby pub. Conversation had been stilted at first, neither of them mentioning the near-fight they’d had on Friday evening. After two glasses of red wine, it was as if the disagreement had never happened, and Emily had found herself quite relaxed and reflecting that it was nice to have someone to share weekends with. If only she didn't have to drag her past behind her like a body wrapped in carpet.

An hour later, she had finally broken free from the city centre and was now heading south towards the outskirts. The roads were still busy, but the traffic was flowing with greater ease. She thought about her destination and her body immediately tensed. She'd been lucky to get an appointment at such short notice, but she'd already prepared a list of questions, which she now went over in her mind, checking that she hadn’t forgotten anything important to the case.

Her phone began to ring in the cup holder. Reaching above her head, she pressed a button on a small device attached to the sun shield, which connected the phone line to the car speakers.
